Elmo was rescued from under a car in August 1988. He was skinny and scraped up, but an otherwise healthy four month old kitten. For many years he shared the house with a temperamental tuxedo girl, Dyna, who immediately adopted him as her baby. He was a sweet and goofy baby who grew into a large and affectionate cat. He helped raise three human children and six kittens. In May of 2002 he became very ill, his kidneys were failing and he spent several days at Dr. Jones office. He made it through the kidney crash; daily sub'q fluids and a few meds kept him going. January 2006 found Elmo at Dr. Jones office, looking terrible, with extreme weight loss, thirst and weakness. A diet change, medication change, home blood glucose testing and less than a month on insulin brought his diabetes into remission, where it remained. As a bonus, the grain free diet improved his IBD. He faced other health issues, but was a generally healthy and happy old man. At 20 years old he would still come and beg for chicken or steak at the dinner table and couldn't be trusted to stay out of the trash. His health had declined rapidly during the last month of his life. Elmo passed away quietly at home on November 23, 2008. |
